When and How Often Should You Feed a Hamster?

Give your hamster its main food at about the same time each evening, using the portion guidance on the food package as a starting point and adjusting with your veterinarian if your hamster’s size, age, or health calls for it. Your hamster may carry food away and eat it later, so an empty bowl does not necessarily mean it ate everything right away.

Provide fresh water every day and make sure the bottle or dish is clean and working, since food alone does not meet your hamster’s hydration needs. You can offer small amounts of hamster-safe fresh vegetables as an occasional addition to the main diet, then remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils.

Hamsters naturally stash food, so look in their usual storage spots when you clean the enclosure and remove anything damp, spoiled, or perishable. Try not to clear out every dry-food cache without replacing access to food, because that can leave you with a misleading picture of how much your hamster has available.
If you will be away at feeding time, arrange for someone to provide food and fresh water and to confirm that your hamster appears well; do not rely on a large pile of food as a substitute for daily care. Our Happy Hamster Feeding Routine Checklist is a printable digital guide you can use to keep the feeding routine in view.
Offer your hamster its main food once daily, ideally in the evening, while keeping fresh water available at all times. Because hamsters store food, use the recommended portion and observe both the bowl and any caches rather than repeatedly topping up an empty bowl.
Do not plan to leave your hamster without food for two days, even if it may have some stored away. If you are going away, arrange daily care so someone can provide food and water and check on your hamster.
