How Often Should You Refill Your Hamster’s Food?

We recommend checking your hamster’s food every day and offering a fresh, measured portion of their regular food, rather than waiting for the bowl to look empty. Hamsters often carry food to a nest or other hiding spot, so an empty bowl does not necessarily mean your hamster has eaten everything, and a full bowl does not tell you whether the food is fresh.
As part of your daily routine, note how much food remains in the bowl and look for stored food without repeatedly disturbing your hamster’s nest. Remove spoiled food and any fresh produce left uneaten, but avoid clearing out a clean, dry food stash all at once; hamsters naturally store food, and suddenly removing it can disrupt their routine.

If food consistently piles up, you may be offering more than your hamster needs; if you rarely find any food and your hamster seems unusually hungry or is losing weight, ask a veterinarian about the amount you’re feeding. We suggest following the feeding directions for your hamster’s main food as a starting point, then accounting for treats and fresh foods so they do not crowd out a balanced diet.
