Adjustable Dog Collar and Puppy Harness Set: Fit Guide

A collar can hold identification so your contact information is available if your puppy gets separated from you. For walks, a properly fitted harness can serve as an alternative leash-attachment point. Some owners use both: the collar for identification and the harness for the leash. Which arrangement works best depends on your puppy and the activity.
Neither piece replaces supervision or patient leash training. A puppy who pulls, freezes, or tries to wriggle free needs your attention, not simply a different attachment point. The Humane Society’s guidance on dog collars and harnesses is a useful additional resource when you’re considering how different types of gear are used.
Measure your puppy before choosing a size. Once you have the set, adjust it on your puppy indoors; a size label alone cannot tell you how it fits.
For the collar, you should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and your puppy’s neck without forcing them. Make sure it cannot easily slip over the head, and look for pinching after your puppy moves.
For the harness, watch your puppy walk and turn. It should stay in place without rubbing behind the front legs or restricting shoulder movement. Gently assess whether your puppy could back out of it, and adjust an uncertain fit before attaching the leash.

Introduce one piece at a time during brief, supervised sessions indoors. Offer a treat and praise, then remove it. If your puppy seems worried, shorten the session.
Once your puppy moves comfortably in both pieces, attach the leash and practice a few calm steps. If they stop, give them a moment rather than tugging them forward.
Before heading out, inspect closures and leash-attachment points for damage, then check that neither piece sits against your puppy’s skin in a new way. Keep watching their movement during the walk. Remove the harness when appropriate rather than leaving it on an unattended puppy where it could catch on something.
For supervised playtime ideas beyond walks, our Brain Boost Fun for Dogs printable checklist is an optional companion. It does not replace walks, supervision, or training.
Before each outing, take a moment to check the fit and condition of both pieces. Look over closures and leash-attachment points, and make sure nothing is damaged or sitting against your puppy’s skin in a new way. Once outside, continue watching how your puppy moves; a quick check at home cannot tell you everything about how gear feels during a walk.
Remove walking gear when appropriate. In particular, avoid leaving a harness on an unattended puppy if it could catch on something. Store the set where you can easily inspect it before the next outing, and reassess the fit as your puppy changes size.
Walks are only one part of a puppy’s day. For ideas to make supervised playtime at home more engaging, our Brain Boost Fun for Dogs printable checklist is an optional companion. Enrichment activities can add variety to your routine, but they do not replace walks, supervision, or training.
The Cute Bear Pet Harness Leash Set for Dogs & Cats is another restraint option to compare with the featured restraint; verify fit, materials, and included hardware against the same car or use case.

“I’m so impressed with this collar and harness set. It’s fully adjustable, really sturdy but still comfortable for my little furball. Plus, it looks great! 🐾”

We can’t verify a current recommendation from Cesar Millan. For your puppy, focus on a collar that fits securely and comfortably, and introduce it with supervision.
That is commonly called a martingale-style collar. It differs from an adjustable everyday collar and needs careful fitting; it is not, by itself, a solution to pulling.
A properly fitted harness can provide an alternative place to attach a leash for walks. You may still choose a collar for identification.
Adjust it so you can comfortably slide two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck while ensuring it cannot easily slip over the head. Look for rubbing and reassess the fit as your puppy grows.
